Carla Cascio Biography and Artist Statement
Carla Cascio has been making artwork in the form of mixed media and acrylic painting for over 20 years. Self-taught, she has created a body of work that ranges from acrylic paintings to mixed-media assemblages that engage the audience with their textural effects.
While attending Loyola University of Chicago where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Communication, a Fine Arts professor mentioned that she reminded her of artist, Remedios Varo. While not a direct influence, she is inspired by Varo’s use of illusion within her creations. Fifteen years in the travel industry exposed her to a wide variety of artistic styles and sensibilities from artists she admires like Georgia O’Keefe and Frida Kahlo. As mixed-media, collage and scrapbooking have exploded on the world of art and crafting, Cascio has added 2-D and 3-D design to her repertoire with the intention of drawing the viewer in with wonder.
“I am interested in layering various objects, mediums and paint to create a tableau that encourages the viewer to question how the piece was comprised. I’ve found that my audience is genuinely surprised that common objects like rocks, sand and paint can be collaged in such a way that you are unsure just what a piece is made of. I enjoy using found objects in an unusual manner and continue to be inspired by the patterns that result. I especially enjoy using earthtones, basic black and natural objects in my compositions. I foresee continuing to expand my use of mixed media in the form of natural objects, paper, shells and other found objects I come across in my travels”.
Cascio has twice held the honor as “Artist of the Month” at the Schaumburg, IL Prairie Center for the Arts as well as being an exhibitor in the prestigious, “Around the Coyote” Arts Festival held in Chicago, IL. She has contributed custom artwork for the United Airlines Onboard Service division employee award ceremony. In addition, she has donated pieces for auction in charity events in both Minnesota and Illinois. Her work is included in many private collections.
Cascio holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication from Loyola University of Chicago as well as a Master’s Degree in Mass Communication from the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL. When visiting Florida, she supports the artistic community by contributing to the Art Center of Sarasota, Longboat Key and Venice, FL. She lives and works in Hoffman Estates, a Chicago suburb.
